If you are a student from a Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST) family, the Government of India has money set aside for you right now.
Not a loan. Not an exam you need to crack. Free money — directly into your bank account — to pay your tuition, hostel fees, and living expenses so that you never have to leave school or college because of money problems.
Millions of eligible students do not apply every year. Some do not know the scholarships exist. Some find the process confusing. Some miss the deadline.
This article solves all three problems. Here is the complete list of every major SC ST scholarship from the central government — eligibility, amount, last date, and exactly how to apply — all in one place.
Read this. Share it with every SC/ST student you know. Apply before the deadline.
1. What Is the SC ST Scholarship Scheme?
The SC ST OBC Scholarship is a government initiative to support students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). This scholarship program provides financial assistance to students so that they can complete their education without financial difficulties. The main aim of the scheme is to promote education among disadvantaged groups and ensure equal opportunities for higher studies.
These scholarships are available for students from Class 1 to the PhD level. Eligible students can apply online, upload required documents, and receive scholarship benefits directly in their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
The legal foundation for these scholarships comes directly from Article 46 of the Indian Constitution, which directs the State to promote with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of the people. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar built this protection into the Constitution himself.
There are two types of scholarships:
Central Government Scholarships — funded by the Government of India, available to students across all states. Applied through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
State Government Scholarships — funded by individual states, applied through state-specific portals. Some states like Maharashtra (MahaDBT), Karnataka (SSP), Odisha (PRERANA), and West Bengal (OASIS) have their own separate systems.
This article covers both, but focuses on central government scholarships first since they are the most important and most widely available.
2. SC ST Scholarship Portal — The National Scholarship Portal (NSP)
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) has commenced registrations for the 2025-26 academic year, offering a streamlined platform for students across India to apply for various scholarships provided by central and state governments. This initiative aims to provide financial assistance to students from economically weaker sections, enabling them to pursue their education without financial constraints.
Official NSP Website: scholarships.gov.in
The NSP is a single platform that hosts scholarships from:
- Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) — for SC students
- Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) — for ST students
- Ministry of Minority Affairs — for minority students
- Ministry of Education — for Central Sector Scholarships
- Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities
The NSP serves as a centralized platform for students to apply for multiple scholarship schemes, including Pre-Matric Scholarships (for students from Class 1 to 10), Post-Matric Scholarships (for students from Class 11 to PhD), Merit-cum-Means Scholarships (for professional and technical courses), and Top Class Education Scholarships (for SC/ST students pursuing higher education).
3. One-Time Registration (OTR) — The First Step
Before you can apply for any scholarship on NSP, you must complete the One-Time Registration (OTR).
One Time Registration (OTR) is a unique 14-digit number issued based on the Aadhaar/Aadhaar Enrolment ID (EID) and is applicable for the entire academic career of the student. OTR is required to apply for a scholarship on the National Scholarship Portal.
OTR simplifies the scholarship application process, thereby eliminating the need for registration in each academic year.
How to get your OTR:
- Go to scholarships.gov.in
- Click “New Registration”
- Enter your Aadhaar number or Aadhaar Enrolment ID
- Verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Your 14-digit OTR number will be generated
- Save this number — you will use it every year
Important for ST Students: As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), OTR (One-Time Registration) is mandatory for ST students applying for both Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships.

This scheme does not give money directly to students. Instead, it provides capital grants to NGOs and voluntary organisations to build or upgrade hostels for SC and OBC students.

Many nursing students from SC/ST backgrounds ask specifically about scholarships for their course. Good news — you are fully covered.
Nursing is classified as a professional course (B.Sc Nursing, GNM) under the Post-Matric Scholarship for SC/ST. This means you get:
- The professional course rate — ₹550/month (day scholar) or ₹1,000/month (hosteller)
- Full tuition fee paid directly to your nursing college
- Book a grant of ₹1,600/year
Additional Sources for Nursing Students:
- ONGC Scholarship — specifically for SC/ST students in technical/professional courses, including nursing. 1,000 students per year for SC/ST. Contact ONGC directly.
- State Nursing Council Scholarships — many states have specific scholarships for SC/ST nursing students. Check your state’s health department website.
- Hospital-Funded Scholarships — Government hospitals that run nursing training often have their own financial assistance for SC/ST candidates.
How to Apply: Same NSP process as other Post-Matric scholarships. When filling the form, select “Post Matric” and choose your course type as “Professional” — B.Sc Nursing or GNM.
20. Common Reasons Scholarships Get Rejected
Read this section carefully. These are the most common reasons good applications get rejected:
1. Aadhaar not linked to bank account. Your scholarship money arrives through DBT — Direct Bank Transfer. If your Aadhaar is not seeded to your bank account, the money bounces back. Fix this at your bank branch before applying.
2. Income certificate is old or from the wrong authority. The income certificate must be from the current year and issued by the correct authority (Tehsildar or SDM). Old income certificates are rejected.
3. The institute did not verify on time. This is the most common reason — and it is not your fault. Your college’s scholarship coordinator must verify your application before the deadline. Follow up with them in person, by phone, and in writing.
4. Applying to the wrong portal, SC students must apply to the correct scheme. Applying for an ST scheme or a minority scholarship scheme will result in rejection.
5. Wrong or inactive bank account. Use your own bank account. Joint accounts are not accepted. Make sure your account is active and has no freezing issues.
6. Documents not matching the name on Aadhaar must match the name on the caste certificate, must match the name on the marksheet, and must match the name on the bank account. Even small spelling differences cause rejection.
7. Applying after the deadline. There is no mercy for late applications. Apply as soon as the portal opens — ideally in the first week.

Conclusion
The SC/ST scholarship system in India is one of the most generous in the world. The Government of India — through the Constitution that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar built — has committed to funding the education of every SC/ST student from Class 1 all the way to PhD, and even abroad for Master’s and Doctorate programmes.
But money sitting in a government scheme does not automatically reach you. You have to apply for it. You have to do it on time. You have to do it correctly.
Here is your action plan — do all three this week:
Step 1: Go to scholarships.gov.in and complete your OTR registration today. It takes 15 minutes.
Step 2: Gather all your documents — Aadhaar, caste certificate, income certificate, marksheet, and bank passbook. Get your Aadhaar linked to your bank account if it is not already.
Step 3: Apply for every scheme you are eligible for. There is no rule against applying for multiple scholarships. Apply for all of them.
Do not waste what Babasaheb built for you.
Jai Bhim. 🙏
